We had a fantastic conversation with artist Rebecca Rutstein and oceanographer Dr. Mandy Joye about how intertwining art and science allows us to glimpse the world of ocean depths and make the hidden palpable.

The collaboration of an artist and a scientist has helped shed light on the secrets of the oceans; unfathomable and mysterious depths that hide myriad lifeforms, thriving ecosystems and whose complex networks feed into making land habitable for countless species, including Homo sapiens. The conversation touched on the macro and the micro, like fractals echoing shared structures, and how these patterns emerge in scientific data with profound implications as well as in the beautiful reverberations of installations of light and paint. Artist Rebecca Rutstein and oceanographer Dr Samantha Joye have worked together on a number of projects, delved into the oceans in deep dives and will share with us some of their fascinating insights.
