Session May 2021
Movement and Pigment
Speakers Megumi Eda and Gabriel Schmitz
in conversation with Elina Cerla
We were joined by artists Megumi Eda, wonderfully expressive dancer who also works with film, and Gabriel Schmitz, whose paintings and drawings are often the traces of collaboration with dancers. Megumi and Gabriel met whilst at MANA Contemporary in New Jersey; during dance rehearsals Gabriel joined in, echoing the gestures and movements of the dancers whilst capturing their presence and essence in sketches that would later become paintings. We delved into how both dancing and painting are expressions of an embodied exploratory process. How does a movement influence a painter? How does movement translate from one haptic language to another? What happens when this collision beyond words takes place?
